Vidalia Firsts

Date Event
  The first school in Vidalia, called the Daniel Baptist Academy, was located in the middle of the present Church Street, near the Primitive Baptist Church. This two story log structure accommodated boarding students.
1874 Rev. Turner Smith organized the Gethsemane Baptist Church. The name was later changed to the Vidalia Baptist Church, and now is the First Baptist Church.
1890 The first post office was established on August 15, 1890. Vidalia's first postmaster was Mr. W.T. Jenkins.
1891 The Vidalia Methodist Church was founded in 1891 during the pastorate of Rev. D. F. Miles.
1901 The first bank in Vidalia was the Citizens Bank organized in 1901.
1905 The first telephone company in Vidalia was the Southen Bell Company, which moved into Vidalia on September 22, 1905.
1906 Vidalia's first hospital, built in 1906, was called the Minnie Lou Sanitarium. It was built and first operated by Dr. M.L. Currie. The building, which contained Vidalia's first elevator, was a two story wooden structure with 29 rooms.
1912 The Vidalia Primitive Baptist Church was constituted on the Friday before the fifth Sunday in August 1912.
1927 Cigaretts were made for the first time in Vidalia on October 5, 1927.
1938 The first pecan auction market in the world originated in Vidalia in 1938 by J.B. Brewton.
1946 W.V.O.P. started broadcasting on August 8, 1946, with 225 watts.
1947 Vidalia had the second meat curing plant in Georgia in January, 1947.
1947 The Girl Scouts were organized in Vidalia in February, 1947.
1953 The Vidalia City Pool first opened in July, 1953.
1968 Grace United Methodist Church is the first United Methodist Church in the United States. Grace has the distinction of beign the first church in the United States to be organized after the merger of the Methodist Church and Evanglical United Brethren Church.
1992 It was Chevy Dinkins of Vidalia who was the first-ever winner of the Georgia Lottery.
