Lyons will be the star of the show when a Travel Channel exclusive airs in early July.
The crew for “Best of America” was in the county seat over the weekend and were treated to some down home flair.
“We tried to show them why we think Lyons is so special,” said Joy Lewis, Lyons Better Hometown manager. “It was a pleasure to show them our town.”
Doug Sloan, Tom Seay, and a crew came into Lyons on Friday and spent a whirlwind three days metting the people, taping the sights and getting the grand tour hosted by Lewis, Mayor John Moore and other Lyonites.
“I just thin it’s wonderful to have them want to spotlight our town,: said Mayor Moore. “I’ll tell you: to get this kind of national recognition says something about Lyons and the people of the town.”
The tour began early Friday morning at The Blue Marquee where Moore welcomed the crew to Lyons. From there, it was non-stop as they traveled to local merchants’ businesses, the Lyons Depot, stopped for lunch at Chatters and explored the sotry of the Vidalia Onion courtesy of R.T. Stanley and the Vidalia Onion Factory.
Staurday, the group got “out on the range,” so to speak, when they visted Southern Trail Dude Ranch in lower Toombs County.
The final even took them, along with several folks from Lyons, to the steakhouse on the river. Benton Lee’s served the perfect setting for the crew to meet “Amos The River Rafter” and one of the stars of the upcoming production of “Tales From the Altamaha.”
“Amos (Tim Bell) was in character when he wished them to come back each April for the next sequence and another “tale” from the play.
Lyons was the only town in Georgia selected to be spotlighted according to Lewis.
“This is good for the city of Lyons,” she said. “We knew the state was taking notice and it’s great to know that others are watching, too.”
“It’s going to be something to see Lyons shown on national television,” Moore said. “Hopefully our Southern hospitality will be shown for the viewers to see why we thingk Lyons is so special.”
The episode of “Best of America” filmed in Lyons is expected to aire the first week of July.
