Readers Rouse Up, Right Some Wrongs

ATLANTA — Thanks to two attorneys, Lance Greene of Vidalia and Keith Morris of Baxley, and to Keith’s father, Lawton Morris, also of Baxley, I now know all I ever wanted to know about the Baxley ancestry of actress Laura Linney, who was written about in this space recently.

Lance wrote to say that his friend Keith personally knows Laura, who co-stars with Jim Carrey in the acclaimed current motion picture, The Truman Show, and also stars in the Showtime miniseries More Tales of the City on TV and in the drama Honour with Jane Alexander on Broadway.

I called Keith Morris and learned that Laura’s grandmother — whom she identified in a recent interview with the Atlanta newspaper as having been “from Baxley” — was Mrs. Milton Leggett. At Keith’s suggestion, I later also called his father, who siad that the Milton Leggett family once lived with his family while he was growing up and while Mr. Leggett was principal of a small rural school in Appling County. The Leggett family included a young Ann Leggett, the actress’ mother, who now is Mrs. Harrison Purse of Connecticut.

Lance Green related in his letter a story that Keith confirmed about a visit Laura made to Baxley when she was “about eight or nine years old,” Keith said. It seems she was out playing one day with several local boys about her age when they “captured” her, tied her to a tree and hung a sign around her neck with the word “Yankee” on it.

Lance said Laura, who was born and grew up in New York, recently said in an interview in a Hollywood trade magazine that the incident with the boys in Baxley was one of the most traumatic of her young life. The Advance Newspaper
