Mrs. Agnes Brooks

Mrs. Agnes W. Brooks, age 85, Waycross, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, in Baptist Village following an extended illness.

The Appling County native was a daughter of the late Jackson H. Whiten. She had resided in Waycross since 1935. She was retired from Satilla Regional Medical Center where she worked as a ward clerk. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class, the Baptist Women, The VIPs and the choir. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Lewis "Bo" Altman, Waycross, and Jacquelyn Lee and James "Red" Castleman, Vidalia; one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin LeGrande and Barbara Brooks, Statesboro; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Rauton, Charleston, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Memorial Baptist Church. Interment followed in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church Organ Fund, 1305 Alice St., Waycross, GA 31501.

Active pallbearers were deacons of Memorial Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers were members of the church choir.

Mr. Robert Brown

Mr. Robert (Bob) Jordan Brown, age 91, Lyons, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, in Bethany Assisted Living in Vidalia following an extended illness.

The native and lifelong Toombs County resident attended Georgia Tech and the Univeristy of Georgia where he studied civil engineering. He was co-owner of Brown Chevrolet Co., until 1957. He was then owner of Brown Parts and Supply Co. in Lyons until his retirment in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II in both India and China until the end of the war. He served as deacon and church treasurer of First Baptist Church of Lyons.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Kathryn Nelson Brown; two sons, Robert Jordan Brown, Jr. and Ray Nowlin Brown; one brother, William "Bill" Brown; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in First Baptist Church of Lyons with the Reverend Grady Walden officiating. Interment followed in Lyons City Cemeter.

Pallbearers were Bobby Nelson, Eddie Tatum, Larry Threlkeld, Ed Nelson, Doug Brown, Robert J. Brown III, Daniel Brown and Jamey Estes.

Mr. James Chandler, Sr.

Mr. James Chandler, Sr., age 84, Tybee Island, Ga., died Tuesday, November 19, 2002, in Candler Hospital of Savannah.

The Lyons native was a graduate of Savannah High Scholl. He attended Clemson university and Armstrong Atlantic University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Army Reserves at the rank of Major. During his military career, he served in the Georgia National Guard, 118th Field Artillery, 48th Armored Division. He was a member of the Savannah Volunteer Guard and the Chatham Artillery, was past governor of the Moose Lodge, a charter member and first president of the Jefferson Athletic Club, and a member of the American Legion. He was past president of the Retail Credit Manager Association of Savannah and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He had resided in Savannah and Richmond, Va., before retiring to Tybee Island in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Lee Smith Chandler, Tybee Island; two sons and one daughter-in-law, James M. "Sandy" and Sally Chandler, Jr., and Christopher D. Chandler, all of Tybee Island; one sister, Cloria Bruno, Dallas, Texas; and one grandson.

Memorial funeral mass was conducted Friday, November 22, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church with Father John Fitzpatrick and Father Albert Fisher officiating. Interment followed in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, USA.

Remembrances may be made to the American Disabled Veterans and the Salvation Army.

Mrs. Annie Mitchell

Mrs. Annie Liza Mitchell, Vidalia, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002, in Bethany Home Nursing Center following an extended illness.

She was a native of Evans County.

Survivors include one daughter, Mattie Brown Stone, Vidalia; one son, Henry Page, Jr., Texas; one sister, Minnie Joyner, Statesboro; one son-in-law, William Slade Stone, Vidalia; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, November 22, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in First Assemby of God in Vidalia with the Reverend David Knight officiating. Interment followed in Eternal Glory Cemetery.

Mrs. JoAnne Moss

Mrs. JoAnne Gordon Moss, age 78, Vidalia, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, following an extended illness.

The native and lifelong Toombs County resident was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Vidalia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland H. Moss.

Survivors include four sons, Michael David Moss, Alexandria, Va., Leland Heflin Moss, Jr., Vidalia, Kris Johnson Moss, Atlanta, and Joel Barkley Moss, Tybee Island; one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred G. and Grady E. Kennedy, Vidalia; one brother, Dan L. Gordon, Jr., Vidalia; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia with the Reverend David Blalock officiating. Interment followed in Lake View Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Danny Kennedy, Paul Kennedy, Billy Snell, Carl Hall, David Pittman and Pete Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Rozier and Wade O'Neal.

Mr. Phillip Murphy

Mr. Phillip C. Murphy, age 39, Statesboro, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness.

The native of Germany had resided most of his life in Colquitt and Toombs counties. He had attended Georgia Southern University and was a member of Marietta Free Will Baptist Church of Lyons.

Survivors include his wife, Katrina Poole Murphy, Statesboro; his parents, Rev. Charles Irvin Murphy and Dorothy7 Murphy, Lyons; one brother, Kenneth D. Murphy, Vidalia; one sister, Sharon Crumpton, Lumber City; his paternal grandmother, Nathalee Allen, Moultrie; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were conducted Saturday, November 16, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Marietta Free Will Baptist Church with the Reverend Charles Beasley and the Reverend Brain Butler officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Tom Parrish, Mark Findley, Brian Oliver, Brett McLain, Clarence Best and Gordon Parrish.

Memorial may be made to Vista Care Hospice Foundation, 105 Wheeler Court, Suite 101, Savannah, GA 31405.

Mrs. Helen Palmer

Mrs. Helen Palmer, age 89, Tarrytown, died Friday, November 22, 2002.

The lifelong Treutlen County resident was a daughter of the late John P. and Hannah Peacock Mixon. She was a retired school teacher and wasa member of Treutlen Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Soperton, and was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Palmer.

Survivors include one son, Richard Palmer, Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 25, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with the Reverend George Grimes officiating. Interment followed in Westvie Cemetery in Soperton.

Pallbearers were Clinton Kent, Manuel Umpier, Chip Rocker, Marc Hooker, John Mixon and Jerry Mixon. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fidelis Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Soperton.

Mrs. Verna Palmer

Mrs. Verna Lee McGahee Palmer, age 77, Vidalia, died Friday, November 22, 2002, in Fairview Park Hospital following an extended illness.

The Wheeler County native had resided in Montgomery County most of her life. She was a homemaker, a member of Old Time Gospel House of Prayer, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Edward Palmer.

Survivors include one son, Ricky Palmer, Vidalia; two daughters, Christine Simons, Tarrytown, and Jackie Holt, Baxley; to grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 25, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Old Time Gospel House of Prayer with the Reverend Donnie Crosby and the Reverend Gerald Lyles officiating. Interment followed in Williamson Cemetery in Montgomery County.

Active pallbearers were Joseph Poole, Mark Wilkinson, Rob Huber, Jimmy Holt, James Moxley and Tim Burkett. Honorary pallbearers were Lanier Poole, Irvin Moxley, Noah Boyette, Joe Blaxton, Morris Brantley, William Willis, Duel Davis, J. C. Humphrery, Talmadge Newsome and C.L. Palmer

Mrs. Phoebe Royal

Mrs. Phoebe "Peggy" Royal, age 71, Fitzgerald, died Friday, November 22, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness.

The Montgomery County native had resided in Fitzgerald for the past 14 months. She was a homemaker and was Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Royal, in 1999.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Collins, Fitzgerald; two sons, Gary W. Brown, Jacksonville, Fla., and Roy T. Brown, Vidalia; three sisters, Dosha Smith, Vidalia, Winnie James, St. Augustine, Fla., and Lyla Fountain, Claxton; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 25, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service of Vidalia with the Reverend Paul Carlson officiating. Interment followed in Sharpe Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gary Brown, Jim Goss, Zack Pullen, Andrew Collins, Austin Collins and Alex Collins.

Mr. Hammond Smith

Mr. Hammond Smith, age 86, Uvalda, died Monday, November 25, 2002, in the Fairview Park Hospital of Dublin after a brief illness.

He was a native of Montgomery County. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Snow Hill Church of God near Glenwood.

Survivors include one brother, Rev. Henry C. Smith, Brunswick; three grandsons, Dr. Thomas Craft, Jr., Dublin, Staff Sergeant Timothy Craft, Warner Robins, and Travis Craft, Dublin; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Tommy Craft, Dublin.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in the Mosley Cemetery near Uvalda with the Rev. W.R. Connell officiating. Interment followed.

Mr. Willie Wells

Mr. Willie (Billy) Lee Wells, Scottsdale, Ga., died Wednesday, November 20, 2002.

The Montgomery County native was a master brick mason by trade.

Survivors include five daughters, Lyntoria Wells and Neka Wells, Chattanooga, Tenn., Regina Goldthreate, Buffalo, N.Y., Eleanor Davis, Macon, and Moni Wiggins, Atlanta; one son, Alex Goldthreate; his father, Albert Wells, Sr., Mt. Vernon; 10 brothers, Leotis Wells, Joseph Wells, Donald Wells and Danny Wells, all of Pasadena, Calif., James Wells, San Bernardino, Calif., Dr. Wayne Wells and Barney Wells, both of Tallahassee, Fla., Alberts Wells, Jr., Scottsdale, Larry Wells, Atlanta, and Brent Wells, Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Zeobia Bizzle, Pasadena, Dorothy W. Days, Mt. Vernon, and Susan Griffin, Decatur, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 25, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Tarrytown with the Reverend James Days officiating. Interment followed in Eternal Glory Gardens in Vidalia.

Mrs. Joy Wood

Mrs. Joy Faye Howell Wood, age 53, Rockledge, Ga., died Tuesday, November 19, 2002.

The Vidalia native was a daughter of the late James Thomas Howell and the late Erline Taylor Howell. She was a resident of Laurens County for many years, was retired from Bil-Jo, and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in East Dublin.

Survivors include his wife, Katrina Poole Murphy, Statesboro; his parents, Rev. Charles Irvin Murphy and Dorothy7 Murphy, Lyons; one brother, Kenneth D. Murphy, Vidalia; one sister, Sharon Crumpton, Lumber City; his paternal grandmother, Nathalee Allen, Moultrie; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, November 21, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Eastside Baptist Church with the Reverend Larry Wood and the Reverend Sterling Averett officiating. Interment followed in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tommy Howell, Josh Wood, Mark Thigpen, Charlie Graham, Phil Gay, Reese Foskey and Tim Gay.

Townsend Brothers Funeral Home Inc. in Dublin was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
