Mrs. Vernede Griffin Chapman, age 86, Brunswick, died August 5, 2003, in the Hospice of the Golden Isles.
She was a native of Marianna, Florida, and had made her home in Glynn County for many years. She was a member of Glyndale Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class and the Golden Harvest. She was also a member of the Highland Park Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Lynn, Gainsville, Georgia, and Janice Dial and husband Tommy, Cartersville, Georgia; one son, Robert F. Chapman, Jr. and wife Beth, Brunswick; one sister, Martelle Thompson, Miami, Florida; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two geat-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 8, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. in the Glyndale Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Palmetto Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Richard Allen Lynn, Jr., Michael Scott Lynn, Robert Shawn Lynn, Thomas Justin Dial, Robert Frank Chapman III, Bobby Griner, Amy Dial Bell, Lisa Lynn and Brooke Chapman. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Glyndale Baptist Church, Leon Braddock, Don Kicklighter, Otis Robertson, Roy Franks, Von Drew, Hubert Douglas, Carlos Champion, Bobby Davis, Pete Hamilton and John Walter.

Mrs. Thelma Carter Coleman, age 82, Vidalia, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, in Meadows Regional Nursing Center in Vidalia after an extended illness.
She was a native of Jeff Davis County, a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry R. and Joanne Coleman and Buddy and Patty Coleman, all of Vidalia; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Allie C. Snipes, Titusville, Florida, and Anges C. Culpepper, Port Saint Joe, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Thursday, August 7, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bill Berryhill and Rev. Emory Fennell officiating. Interment followed.
Pallbearers were Dale Dykes, Brian Sikes, Albert Strickland, Frank Williams, Larry Stewart, John Kennedy and Paul White.
Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice.

Mrs. Rosa Barrow Hamilton, age 85, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003.
She lived in Collegedale for several years. She served as Director of Welfare in Montgomery County and also owned and operated businesses in Georgia and Tennessee. She was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church in Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Hamilton and her parents, Horace and Jennie Barrow.
Survivors include her daughter and husband, Emily H. and George Farmer, Collegedale; grandchildren, Rosanne Farmer and Geoffrey and Laura Farmer, all of Tennessee; four sisters, Johnnie Mae Hamilton, Sara Pennigton, Nell Walden and Dorothy Atwell, all of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 7, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. in the Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Walliser officiating. Graveside services and interment followed on Friday, August 8, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Kibbee.

Mr. Alton Hutcheson, age 44, Vidalia, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, in the Memorial Health University Medical Center of Savannah after a brief illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was a construction worker and Christian Advent by faith.
Survivors include his mother, Zonna Mae Hutcheson, Vidalia; one brother, Lamar Hutcheson, Vidalia; four sisters, Wanda Lightsey, Conyers, Loudie Hutcheson, Debra kirkland and Wendy Hutcheson, all of Vidalia; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 8, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Clint Hutcheson officiating. Interment followed in the Hutcheson Cemetery.
Pallbearers were James Barwick, Bobby Barwick, Jim Barwick, Steve Rewis, Richard Burns and Bernard Taylor.

Mrs. Georgia Nell Harrell Kemp, age 73, Lyons, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at her daughter's home in Jacksonville, Florida.
She was born in Oak Park. She later moved to Jacksonville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church of Lyons.
Survivors include one son, David Kemp and wife, Linda, Jacksonville; two daughters, Pamela Moneyhun and husband, Jeff, and Sharon Salem and husband; all of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, J. David Kemp and wife Stephanie, Saint Louis, Missouri, Christopher, Erin and Ashley Kemp and Tavis and Matthew Grove and Heather and Kimberly Salem, all of Jacksonville; one grandson, David Lane Kemp, Saint Louis; one sister, Jeanette Bagwill and husband, Randall, Canton; and several nieces and newphews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 10, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with dr. Max Hill officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. David Taylor Kersey, age 79, Vidalia, died Saturday, August 9, 2003, in the Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia after an extended illness.
He was the son of Elijah Kersey and Maudene Morgan Kersey. He worked in Savannah as a sheet metal worker before joining Kentucky Fried Chicken. He opened three stores in the LaGrange area before relocating to Vidalia and had the kentucky Fried Chicken store in Vidalia and Douglas until his retirement in 1990. He served in the U.S. Army in World World II and was a member of the Stillmore Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Hill Kersey, Vidalia; one daughter, Deborah Louise Parker and husband Paul, Douglas; one son, Rev. Gerald Louis Claxton and wife Elizabeth, Savannah; two brothers, Dan Kersey and Jessie Kersey, both of Stillmore; one sister, Oleta Durden, Aline; five grandchildren, Michael and Gregory Claxton, Sherri Claxton Schaff, Christopher Paul Yaughn and Kaci Yaughn Hutchinson; four grandsons; and three great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Glenn Bohannon and Rev. George Archer officiating. Interment followed in the Old Canoochee Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Justin Claxton, Ryan Claxton, Michael Claxton, Gregory Claxton, Christopher Yaughn, Stuart Hutchinson and Casey Schaff.

Mr. A. D. Mayo, age 83, Lyons, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was a retired farmer, a United States Air Force veteran of World War II, a past Toombs County Commissioner, a member of the Lyons Masonic Lodge, a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons and the Barracca Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Anderson Mayo, Lyons; four daughters and husbands, Dawn Mayo Laboone and Rodney, Lyons; Debarah Mayo Palmer and Ronald, Lyons; Delainie Mayo Collins and Terry, Lyons, and Deidre Mayo Morgan and Stanley, Statesboro; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Lyons with the pastor Rev. Dannie Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Lyons City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Harry Brown, Marvin Porter, W.L. Findley, Vernon Kennedy, Wayne Smith and Hardy Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lyons building fund.

Mrs. Zeva McKinna, age 79, Brunswick, died August 4, 2003, in the Hospice of the Golden Isles.
She was a native of Vidalia and has been a resident of Brunswick for a while. She worked at Rich/Leaphart Hospital in Jesup and later worked at the Old Brusnwick Hospital. Later she began working at the Glynco Naval Air Station to start the new dependent clinic. After her retirement sh then set-up the Medical Clinic for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. She retired from FLETC in 1978. She received several honors during her career, including a special commendation from the Secretary of the Treasury, Nicholas Brady. She was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brunswick and Red Cross volunteer. She worked with hospice of the Golden Isles as a volunteer.
Survivors include her husband, Richard G. McKinna, Brunswick; one daughter, Beth M. Carroll, Brunswick; two sons, Richard G. McKinna, Jr., Brunswick; and Gregory Alva McKinna, Missouri; one sister, Jackie Brinson, Savannah; one brother, Billy Adams, Macon; two granddaughters, Erin Carroll Nail and Julia McKinna, both of Brunswick; two grandsons, Trevor Carroll, Cherry Point, N.C.; and Chris McKinna, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Friday, August 8, 2003, in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brunswick.

Mr. Curtis Smith, Jr., Vidalia, died Monday, August 4, 2003, in the Meadows Nursing Center Care of Vidalia.
He was a native of Montgomery County.
Survivors include his wife, Susie Smith, Reidsville; two sisters Annette Mitchell, Vidalia, and Annie Valdes, Miami, Florida; one brother, David Smith, Lexington, Ky.; seven step-children, Gwendolyn Young, Ghylea Young and Cassandra Young, all of Miami, Rubin Young, Huntsville, Alabama, Cecil Young, Naranja, Florida, Roy Young and Alan Young, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and 15 grands.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 9, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in the Phillips Temple Church, Vidalia, with Bishop Vincent Drummer officiating. Intement followed in the East Park Cemetery, Vidalia.
