Mrs. Carol A. Banks, age 47, Vidalia, died Friday, December 20, 2002, in Meadows Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
The native and lifelong Toombs County resident was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Banks, Vidalia; one daughter, Pam Hutchison, Hazlehurst; two sons, Tony Banks, Vidalia, and Roger Rodenberry, Jr., Hazlehurst; her mother, Audrey C. Driggers, Vidalia; four sisters, Patricia Grantham, Moultrie, Jan Callaway, Ludowici, Wanda McQuitty, Valdosta, and Charlotte Meadows, Santa Claus; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 23, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with the Reverend Efton Green officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Ansel Kersey, Bobby Blount, Larry Adams, Larry Williams, Larry Rushing and Dennis Thornton.

Mrs. Clara Ellen Brown, age 83, Uvalda, died Friday, December 27, 2002, in Wheeler County Hospital of Glenwood following an extended illness.
The Toombs County native had resided in Uvalda most of her life. She was a retired merchant and a member of Uvalda Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Carpenter and Patricia Adams, both of Uvalda; one son, Billy Brown, Uvalda; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 29, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Uvalda Methodist Church with the Reverend Howard Conine officiating. Interment followed in Uvalda City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Pat Graham, Johnny Corley, David Adams, Dexter Cason, Earl Forth and Byrant Adams. Honorary pallbearers were Green Thigpen, Mabel Johnson, Carolyn Anderson, James Carpenter, Brenda Glisson, Rev. Daid Aycock, Peggy Avant, Dean Dopson, Lloyd Moses, Austin Morris and Martha Jackson.

Mr. Douglas M. Campbell, age 58, Lyons, died Tuesday, December 12, 2002, at his residence following a breif illness.
The Abbeville, S.C., native relocated to Vidalia three years ago. He was a civil engineer, a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam, a member of Jasper County Masonic Lodge, a member of Al Sihah Shrine Temple in Macon, a foster parent and was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include his wife, Jan Campbell, Lyons; his children, Shannon Campbell, Hudson, Fla., Lonna Glisson, Keystone Heights, Fla., Lee Price, Laurinburg, N.C., Jessica Campbell, Lyons, Justice, Aaron, Dyland and Savannah, all of Lyons, and Lois, James and Emily, all of Lyons; three brothers, James C. Campbell, Columbia, S.C., and Michael Lee Campbell and Robert C. Campbell, both of South Carolina; two sisters, Terri Lewis, Abbeville, and Patricia Lynn Dangerfield, South Carolina; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 15, 2002, at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home in Abbeville. Interment followed in Melrose Cemetery.

Mr. Cecil W. Conaway, age 92, Vidalia, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, in Wheeler County Hospital of Glenwood following an extended illness.
The native and lifelong Montgomery County resident was a retired farmer, a member of Woodmen of the World, and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Kibbee.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Mae Willis Conaway, Vidalia; one daughter and son-in-law, Imogene and A.C. Edenfield, Vidalia; one sister, Margia Brooks, Tarrytown; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 23, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia with the Reverend Pat Quattlebaum and the Reverend Dale Fincher officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearters were Noah Taylor, Vernon Sumner, Curtis Warnock, Homer Rivers, Royle Sullivan and Chelsey Hilton.

Mr. William Kenneth Flanders, age 85, Lyons, died Friday, December 27, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness.
The Emanuel County native had resided in Toombs County most of his life. He was retired from Price Chevrolet Company in Charlottesville, Va. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, was a member of the American Legion, and a member of the Lyons Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Lyons First United Methodist Church, and a member of the Methodist Men's Club and the Men's Bible Class.
Survivors include two sister, Alice Flanders, Swainsboro, and Martha Nelle Braziel, Lyons; one brother, Maxwell Flanders, Lyons; one stepson, Tom Schulte, Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 30, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in Lyons First United Methodist Church with the Reverend James Aycock and the Reverend Dr. Max Hill officiating, Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Pacer Joyner, Billy Benton, Billy Robertson, Marion Franklin, Jimmy Brandeburg and Melvin McBride.

Mr. Richard Jarriel, age 68, Collins, died Thursday, December 19, 2002, in Glenvue Nursing Home.
The Toombs County native was a son on the late Herman and Maudie Jarriel. He had resided most of his life in Collins. He was retired from Kaiser Chemicals & Fertilizer in Lyons, and was a member of Collins United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Alexander, and a brother, Rabun Jarriel.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda Jarriel, Collins, and Mary and Keith Delaigle, Milledgeville; three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Debbie Jarriel, Augusta, Ricky and Diane Jarriel, Collins, and Eddie and Sylvia Jarriel, Vidalia; one brother, Rufus Jarriel, St. Augustine, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 21, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Services Inc. of Reidsville with the Reverend Tony Smith officiating. Interment followed in Collins Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lyons.
Pallbearers were Roger Jarriel, Harris, Jarriel, Larry Jarriel, DeWayne Jarriel, Chris Horton and Michael Grimes.

Mrs. Vera Rawls McBride, age 107, died Sunday, December 22, 2002, in Meadows Nursing Center following a short illness.
The Guyton native had resided most of her early years in Talbotton. She was a 1914 graduate of LaGrange College and relocated to Alston in 1920. She was a charter member of the United Methodist Women in Uvalda and was the oldest citizen of Montgomery County, residing there for 82 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford McBride.
Survivors include two daughter, Ala and Lulane McBride, both of Alston; and several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 26, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. in Alston Methodist Church with the Reverend David Aycock and the Reverend Church Morgan officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers wer Edwin McBride, Jimmy McBride, Melvin McBride, Billy McBride, Mike Johnson and Ray Moses.

Mrs. Alice "Coot" Mercer, age 68, Mt. Vernon, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002.
The lifelong Montgomery County resident was a daughter of the late Otis and Maudie Lee Gillis Thigpen. She was a homemaker and a member of Higgston Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Rex Mercer; children, Marsha Perdue, Dublin, and Darrell Mercer and Kevin Mercer, both of Mount Vernon, one sister, Tina Holland, Mount Vernon; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 27, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Sammons Funeral Home in Soperton with the Reverend Fred Swann and the Reverend Nolon McDaniel officiating. Interment followed in Adams Cemetery in Montgomery County.
Active pallbearers were Ted Mercer, Thomas Mercer, Terry Gillis, Danny Gillis, Scott Holland and Howard Thigpen. The honorary escort included Gary Braddy, Pete Braddy, Kelly Braddy, Marvin Green, Ed Thigpen, Douglas Morris, Stacy Woods and Andy Selph.

Mrs. Frankie S. Slack, age 63, Vidalia, died Saturday, December 21, 2002, in Meadows Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
The Telfair County native had resided in Vidalia for the past 40 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Vidalia First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Tommy J. Slack and Steven Bostwick, both of Vidalia; one grandson; her mother and stepfather, Sarah and Lamar Gemes, Cedar Grove; and one sister, Judy Thompson, Eatonton.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 23, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with the Reverend David Blalock officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Raines, Chris Meeks, Robby Townsend, Stan Riner, Brett Thompson and Ashley Corbin.

Mrs. Nancy L. Stanfield, age 54, Collins, died Thursday, December 26, 2002, at her residence.
The California native had resided in Collins for the past 16 years. She was the training manager for Little Caesar's Pizza.
Survivors include her husband, William P. Stanfield, Collins; three sons, Patrick Rich, Holliday, Fla., and James Rich and John Stanfield, both of Collins; one stepson, William Stanfield, Pallameta, Fla.; one daughter, Kathy Smith, Hinesville; three brothers; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment will be private.

Dr. Olin David Thompson, age 63, St. Simons Island, died Thursday, December 26, 2002, in Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick following an extended illness.
The Vidalia native was the son of the late Julius Everett Thompson. He was a graduate of Mercer University where he was president of the Student Government Association and the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was tapped for Blue Key and was recipient of the coveted Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award. He graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry and returned to Vidalia to open a dental practice. In 1986 he relocated to St. Simons Island and continued to practice dentistry. Professionally he was a member of Georgia Dental Association and received the 1992 Honorable fellow Award, was a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, and a member of the International Dental Health Association. He was appointed by the Governor of Georgia to serve on the Georgia Board of Dentistry from 1992 to 1998 and served as president of the board from 1995-1996. He was recognized by the Georgia Board of Dentistry "for leadership and dedication he provided the citizens of the state of Georgia and the Georgia Board of dentistry."
Survivors include his mother, Norma S. Thompson, St. Simons, Island; his wife, Jo Johnson Thompson, St. Simons Island; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Elizabeth Thompson, and Dr. Paul and Jenny Thompson, all of St. Simons Island; one daughter, Joanna Lynn Thompson, St. Simons Island; and four grand-children.
Graveside services were conducted Friday, December 27, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. in Pincrest Cemetery with the Reverend Don Moye and the Reverend Bobby Dixon officiating. Memorial services were held Saturday, December 28, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Simons Presbyterian Church.
Memorials may be made to St. Simons Community; or in Vidalia to the Paul Anderson Youth Home or Christian Concepts for Living.
