Mrs. Sarah Anderson Obituary

Mrs. Sarah Collins Anderson, age 88, Lyons, died Sunday, December 29, 2002, in St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital of Savannah following a brief illness.

The native and lifelong Emanuel County resident was a homemaker and was a member of Oak Park Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kiley Anderson.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Vivian and Delmo Cannady, Pooler; two brothers, Otis Collins, Savannah, and Mellie Collins, Dade City, Fla.; two half-brothers; eight half-sisters; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in Mt. Zion Church near Lyons. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Efton Mosley, Jimmy Mixon, Glen Holton, Morris Hall, Vernon Hughes and Trent Akins.

Mr. Edgar Barfield

Mr. D. Edgar Barfield, age 80, Vidalia, died Saturday, January 4, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness.

The Montgomery County native had resided most of his life in the area. He was a retired barber, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of First Assembly of God in Vidalia.

Survivors include his wife, Epsie Lee Chaddrick Barfield, Vidalia; three daughters, Janice Kennedy and Peggy Collins, both of Collins, and Karen Helmy, Vidalia; one son, Jimmy Barfield, Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Irpeel Blaxton, Vidalia, and Joyce DeVitt, augusta; three brothers, G.W. Barfield, Palatka, Fla., Dr. Amos Barfield, Lake Park, Ga., and Bennie Barfield, Douglasville, Ga.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with the Reverend David Knigh offficating. Interment with full military honors followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Mr. Herman Byrd, Sr. Obituary

Mr. Herman L. Byrd, Sr., Flint, Mich., died Sunday, December 29, 2002, in Flint.

The Montgomery County native was retired from General Motors Plant in Michigan.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Byrd; six sons, william Byrd, Herman Byrd, Ike Byrd, Devon Byrd, Anthony Byrd and Mark Byrd, all of Flint; four daughters, Martha Jackson, Uvalda, and Janet Beacoats, Pat Beacoats and Angela Beacoats, all of Flint; his mother, Acho Byrd, Flint; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 4, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. in Flipper New Hope A.M.E. Church in Uvalda with the Reverend James Joyce delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in St. Mary Cemetery in Ailey.

Mrs. Ora Faires Obituary

Mrs. Ora Mae Aaron Bryant Faires, age 83, Lyons, died Monday, December 30, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness.

The Tattnall County native had resided 58 years in Lyons. She was retired from Lyons Manufacturing with 16 years of service, was a homemaker and a member of East Gordon Baptist Church in Lyons.

Survivors include her husband, Rev. R.F. Faires, Lyons; four sons, Gary Leon Bryant, Lyons; Ronald Frank Bryant and wife Judy, Rincon, Kenneth Bryant and wife Wanda, Vidalia, and Ricky Byron Bryant and wife Deanna, Lyons; one stepdaughter, Jeanetta Johnson, Lawrenceville; one stepson, Boyce Faires, Florida; three brother, Ira Aaron and Ezra Aaron, both of Lyons, and Earl Aaron, Panama City, Fla.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 3, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in East Gordon Baptist Church with the Reverend Greg Riner officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were E.J. Aaron, Jr., Larry Allen, Larry Rushing, Calvin Jarriel, Ronnie Graham, Paul Wheeler and Buddy Williamson. Honorary pallbearers were members of East Gordon Baptist Church Adult Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Susie Goocher Obituary

Mrs. Susie E. Goocher, Jonesboro, died January 5, 2003, in Atlanta Medical Center after a brief illness.

Survivors include her husband, Louis Goocher, Jonesboro; two sons, Emory and Isaac Goocher, both of Jonesboro; two sisters-n-law, Sharon Goocher, Smyrna, and Debra Morgan, Marietta; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Byrd, Lyons; two sisters and brothers-n-law, Mary and Michael Mitchum, Collins, and Ann and Jimmy Cook, Lyons; two nephews, Brad Goocher, Smyrna, and Caleb Cook, Lyons; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, January 11, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. in the New Beginning Church of God in Lyons.

Mr. H.P. James Obituary

Mr. H.P. James, age 86, Lyons, died Sunday, December 29, 2002, in Savannah following an extended illness.

The native and lifelong Lyons resident was owner/operator of Lyons Nursery and Landscaping for 42 years. He was a memeber of Lyons First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Jordan James, Lyons; one daughter and son-in-law, Charles and Barbara James, Lyons; three sisters, Rebecca Stumbo, Sarah Jeffers and Opaldean Manning; two brothers, Clint James and Alton James; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Lyons First United Methodist Church with the Reverend James Aycock, the Reverend Dr. Max Hill, and the Reverend Dr. James Staubes officiating. Interment followed in Lyons City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Billy Robertson, Sammy Rockett, Marion Jordon, Byron Jeffers, Edward Johnson and Travis Moore.

Mr. James Martin Obituary

Mr. James David Martin, age 69, Collins, died Sunday, January 5, 2003, at his residence.

The native and lifelong Tattnall County resident was a retired shipping supervisor at Claxton Manufacturing Company with 33 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army, was a former deacon and member of Collins First Baptist Church. He was presently employed as a funeral assistant with Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, and delivered papers for the Savannah Morning News.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lynn Martin, Collins; one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Joanna Martin, Collins; threee brothers and sister-in-law, Royce and Kaye Martin, Pooler, Ellis Martin, Cedar Crossing, and Paul Martin and Pat Martin, both of Collins; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Montez and Ted Deloach, Mendes, and Virginia and Aaron Todd, Claxton; and three granddaughters.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in Collins First Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Charlotte McLean Obituary

Mrs. Charlotte McLean, age 105, Vidalia, died Friday, December 27, 2002, in Bethany Home Nursing Center of Vidalia.

The Harnett County, N.C. native was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Belton Dinkins, Vidalia; and one son-in-law, Willie S. Dinkiins, Vidalia.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 2, 2003, in Norrington A.M.E. Zion Church in Lillington, N.C. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Laveta Meeks Obituary

Mrs. Laveta Meeks, age 72, Uvalda, died Thursday, January 2, 2003, in Memorial Health University Medical Center of Savannah following a brief illness.

The Coffee County native had resided in Fernandina Beach, Fla., for 37 years and relocated to Uvlada in 1992. She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Lyons.

Survivors innclude her husband, Howard Meeks, Uvalda; two daughters, Janice McClendon, Vidalia, and Hazel Harp, Jacksonville, Fla.; three sons, Glen Meeks, Gary Meeks and Duane Meeks, all of Yulee, Fla.; one sister, Mae Stokes, Aiken, S.C.; one brother, Elijah Tanner, Douglas; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 4, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Liberty Baptist Church in Lyons with the Reverend Don Gibbs and the Reverend Larry Montgomery officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Clint Mosley, Randall Query, Jodie Rowe, Rabon Wesberry, Jim Johnson and Jim Cason.

Mr. Clyde Moss Obituary

Mr. Clyde E. Moss, age 92, Vidalia, died Friday, January 3, 2003, in Meadows Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

The Hampton Ga., native had resided in Vidalia for the past 45 years. He was a retired auto mechanic, a member of First United Methodist Church of Vidalia, and the Men's Bible Class. He was preceded in death by his son, Davy Moss, in 1976.

Survivors include his wife, Eva H. Moss, Vidalia; one son, Ronnie Moss, Vidalia; one daughter, Barbara Miller, Vidalia; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 6, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with the Reverend David Blalock and the Reverend Paul Dupree officating. Interment followed in Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Randy Moss, Craig Moss, Brian Mahaffey, Alan Moss, Randy Dowd and Andrew Stephens. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Blaxton, Bill Cumbie, Jack Fields, Barron Godbee, Bill Hodges, Eddie Tyson, Don Waugh and Chan Patel.

Mrs. Ivene Stefanik Obituary

Mrs. Ivene Cave Stefanik, age 81, Punta Gorda, Fla., died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at her residence.

The Toombs County native relocated to Punta Gorda in 1989. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Col. Robert A. Stefanik; one daughter, Ivy Cave Bigbee, Fairfax, Va.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 30, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Vidalia with Father Ron Southerland officiating. Interment followed in Cave Family Cemetery near Lyons.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 21475, St. Perersburg, FL 33742.

Mrs. Phyllis Tollison Obituary

Mrs. Phyllis Tollison Former Vidalian Dies in Brunswick

Mrs. Phyllis Shank Tollison, a former resident of Vidalia, georgia died Wednesday, December 31, 2002, in her residence in Brunswick, Ga., surrounded by her family following an extended illness.

Mrs. Tollison was born in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Zola Bell Shank. She attended Kansas State University where she was a member of Chi Omega, a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She married former Vidalian Hugh K. Tollison in 1944 and lived in Vidalia for serveral years before moving to Brunswick in 1950. Mrs. Tollison raised her children there and was active in the first Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Junior Woman's Club and served as president and she was selected "Woman of the Year".

Her contributions during her long-term volunteer service to the hospital auxiliary included leardership as Gift Shop Chariman for many years. Mrs. Tollison was also an active member of the Music Box Society International and served as treasurer fot the southeast chapter.

The deceased is survived by one daughter, Pamela Tollison Mclancon, Fernandina Beach, florida, and two sons, H. Kenneth (Ken) Tollison and Lawton Tollison, both of Brusnwick. Her grandchildren include: Hans Trupp, Jr., Austin Tollison Trupp, Hugh K. "Trip" Tollison, Leigh Tollison Veal, Margaret "Maggie" Tollison and Jessica "Sassy" Tollison, and sisters-in-law, Lee Shank and Jean Tollison Moses, and serveral nieces and newphews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tollison were held in the First Baptist Church, Brunswick, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 3, 2003, with the Rev. James E. Crandall officiating.

Pallbearers were Bill Brunson, Dr. W.O. Inman, Jr., Jack Sinopoli, Cal Thompson, Mark Thompson and Ernie Tuten. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Acosta, Mitch Coleman, Cliff Fitton, Donald Gleaton, John Hollington, Dr. E.R. Jennings, W.B. Lewis, Phil Newton, Bill Rayburn, Frank Fobertson, Roy Smith, Larry Sweat, Charles Williamson, Woody, Woodside, Lindsey Walker, dr. Marsha Certain, Dr. David Sudduth, Dr. Bruce Tripp, and members of the Hospital Auxiliary at S.E. Ga. Regional Medical Center.

It was Mrs. Tollinson's wish that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Hospital Suxiliary Phyllis Tollison Memorial Fund.

Mrs. Minnie Windham Obituary

Mrs. Minnie Lee Windham, age 86, Keystone Heights, Fla., died Wednesday, January1, 2003, in Orange Park, Fla., following an extended illness.

The Wheeler County native had relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1954 and retired after 30 years of service from the King Edward Cigar Factory. In 1990, she relocated to Keystone Heights and was a member of Keystone Heights Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Windham.

Survivors include one daughter, Gayle Arms and husband Paul, St. Augustine, Fla.; two sons, Jack C. Windham and wife Clara, Odum, and Jeff W. Windham and wife Linda, Orange Park; one sister, Dicey browning, Darien; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 3, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in Sardis Baptist Church in Wheeler County with the Reverend Jimmy Smith officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Robert Young Obituary

Mr. Robert Felton Young, age 91, Collins, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, in Vidalia.

The Washington County native received his B.A. degree from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) and his M.B.A. degree from The University of Georgia. He was a principal in Alverton and Nevills, Ga., and retired as principal of Collins High School after 22 years there. He was a member of Collins Baptist Church and the Retired Teachers Asociation. He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Hall Young.

Survivors include two sons, Robert F. Young, Stockbridge, and Harvel Young, Vidalia; one daughter, Gloria Y. Webb, Merrimack, N.H.; one brother, Frank Lewis Young, Sandersville; two sisters, Madolyn Burkhalter, Augusta, and Helen Woods, Macon; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in Collins Baptist Church with the Reverend Alan McCoy and the Reverend Ansley Jordan officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
