Mr. Dedrick Akins Obituary

Mr. Dedrick David Akins, 68 of Statesboro, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at his home following a sudden illness.

He was born in Bulloch County and was a son of the late Horace A. and Beatrice Nessmith Akins. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War. He was retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. (now Bellsouth) after 36 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Lanette Calhoun Akins and three brother, Heyward, Ben, and Leffler Akins.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Myot and Alice Bea Akins; one grandson, David Samuel Akins; one granddaughter, Lanette Elizabeth Akins, all of Fountain Inn, S.C.; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Leo and Esther Akins of Waycross, Ga., Bernie and Mildred Akins of New Ellenton, S.C., Elsie B. Akins of Bath, S.C., and Ronald and Pat Akins of Belchertown, Ma.; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Christine A. and Bud Birley of East Moline, Il., Jonnie A. and Vernon Wynn of New Ellenton, S.C., Sally A. and Bunny Deal of Statesboro, Barbara A. McNure of Metter, Ga., and Bobbi A. Bennett of Starke, Fla.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 11, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Turner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Julian Ward officiating. Burial was in Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Statesboro, Ga.

Pallbearers were Larry Akins, Mike McNure, Billy McNure, Floyd Futch, Stacy Underwood, Marcelle Thompson, and Al Deal.

Memorial may be made Bethel Missionary Church, C/O Guy B. Deal, 1745 Nessmith Rd., Statesboro, Ga. 30458.

Hodges-Turner-Anderson Funeral Home of Statesboro was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Sid Clark Obituary

Mr. Alexander Sidney "Sid" Clark, age 93, of Lyons, died Monday, April 28, 2003 at his residence after an extended illness.

He was a native of Jenkins County, he lived most of his life in Toombs County. He was a retired businessman and former owner member of the Lyons Lions Club, the Vidalia Rotary Club, and was on the board of directors of the Peoples Bank of Lyons for over 50 years. He was the Lyons Citizen of the Year for 2000, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons and the Men's Bible Class.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Ann Clark of Lyons, one daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Gene Mason of Fitzgerald, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, may 1 at 4:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church of Lyons with Rev. James Aycock officiating. Interment followed in the Lyons City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Eric Clark, Bob Clark, Winston Clark, David Clark, Richard Clark, and Fred Springer. Honorary pallbearers were the Men's Bible Class and the Directors of Peoples Bank.

Mrs. WyoleneFranklin Obituary

Mrs. Wyolene L. Franklin, 73, of Lyons, died Monday, April 28, 2003, in the Meadows Nursing Center of Vidalia after an extended illness.

She was a native of Tattnall County, she lived most of her life in Toombs County. She was retired as a nurse/receptionist with Dr. W.W. Aiken and Dr. J.D. McArthur, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons.

Survivors include one son, Donald Edward Collins of Atlanta; one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Tommy Rollins of Lyons; two sisters, Grace Dermott of Millbrook, Al., and Nancy Boothe of El Paso, Tx.; three grandchildren, Betsy Rollins of Lyons, Karen Falkenberry of Jacksonville, Fla., and William R. Culpepper, Jr. of Las Cruces, NM.; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Thursday, May 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Lyons with the pastor, Rev. Dannie T. Williams officating. Interment followed in the Lyons City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerome Lynn, Jeffrey Lynn, David Lynn, Randy Rollins, Ronnie Rollins, and Tommy Lynn.

Mrs. Minna Patton Obituary

Mrs. Minna Patton, age 82, of Vidalia, died Friday, May 9, 2003 at her residence.

She was a native of Colquitt County, later moved to Atlanta and then moved to Vidalia. She was a retired chief operator from Southern Bell in Vidalia. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, a member of the Pilot Club, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Vidalia where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include one sister, Rilla Ledford, Vidalia; one brother, Jack Riggs, Albnay; one step-son, Murray Patton, Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Manday, May 12, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Vidalia with Rev. David Blalock officiating. Interment followed at 4:00 p.m. in Westview Cemetery in Moultrie.

Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia was in charge of the arrangments.

Mr. Willie Riner Obituary

Mr. Willie R. Riner, 91, of Lyons, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, after an extended illness.

A native of Emanuel County, he lived most of his life in Toombs County. He was a retired farmer, a member and deacon of the Union Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivo9rs include his wife, Annie Lou Barnes Riner, Cedar Crossing; one son and daughter-in-law, Glynn and Rachel Riner, Hampton, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Riner, Alphjaretta and Carla Riner, Winchester, Va.; one sister, Gretell Claxton, Savannah; three Brothers, Bobby Riner, Branchville, S.C., Lenwood and Byron Rinver both of Swainsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 8, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Jones-Stewart Funeral Home of Lyons with Elder Tommy Roundtree and Elder Robert Torrence officating. Interment followed in the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roy Hitchcock, Randall Barnes, Kendall Barnes, James Claxton, Wayne Robinson, and Darrell Riner.

Mrs. Burney Scales Obituary

Mrs. Burney Mann Scales, age 74, of Valdosta died Sunday, May 11, 2003 in the South Georgia Medical Center of Valdosta after a brief illness.

She was a native of Tattnall County residing in Vidalia for 37 years before moving to Valdosta. She was preceded in death by her husband John F. Scales. She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church of Vidalia.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Charles Clark, Hahira; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Irene Scales, Alpharetta; two brothers, James Howell Mann, Jr., Columbus, Miss., and Marcus Eldred Mann, Glennville; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. from Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Rollins officiating. Interment followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Eddie Gibson, Steve Weeks, Jim Morris, Dana Stille, Tony Williamson, and Melvin Cason.

Mrs. Nettie Stripling Obituary

Mrs. Nettie Joyner Stripling, 59, of Opelika, Al., died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, following a brief illness.

She was a native of Lyons, Ga., she is preceded in death by her father, Henry Felton Joyner and brother, Tommy Dewayne Joyner.

Survivors include one son, Charles B. Stripling III; two daughers, Symantha O'Hara and Tamelya Musick both of Alabama, her mother, Myrtle H. Hoyner of Vidalia; four brother, Eugene and Cecil Joyner of Lyons, Larry Joyner of Metter and Jimmy Joyner of Soperton; one sister, Bonnie Van Dyke of Lyons; five grandchildren, Jonathon Stripling, Brandi O'Hara, Brandon, Brianne, and Candace Musick all of Alabama.

Services were conducted Friday, May 2, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Aycock officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Pacer Joyner, Jeremy Joyner, Cameron Joyner, Chris Joyner, Gabe Joyner, and Louis Van Dyke.

Mrs. Gladys Warren Obituary

Mrs. Gladys T. Warren, age 87, Winter Haven, Fla., died Thursday, May 8, 2003, in Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Appling County, living in Miami, Fla. many years and moved to Winter Haven. She was a retired citrus grader for Adams and W.G. Roe and Sons Packing Houses and was a member of Cypress Cathedral Assembly of God in Winter Haven.

Survivors include one son, Chris Warren, Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter, Dorothy Bates, Ft. Payne, Ala.; two step-sons, Reverened Wayne Warren, Monticello, Florida, and Richard Warren, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; three sisters, Hazel Hutcheson and Louise Stone both of Vidalia, and Annie Lewis, Cleveland, Tenn.; four brothers, Louie and Toby Todd, both of Vidalia, and Curtis and Rufus Todd, both of Baxley; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Warren and Rev. David Knight officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Garden.
