Mrs. Lela Pearl Baker Obituary

[Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mrs. Lela Pearl Baker, Lyons, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at her residence.

She was a native of Toombs County.

Survivors include one son, Edgar Baker, Jr., Milford, Ct.; one daughter-in-law, Helen Baker, Milford; three grandchildren, Tracy Johnson, Edgar Baker and Beverlyn Baker; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 17, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Luke A.M.E. Church, Lyons, with Rev. William Eason officiating. Interment followed in the Eternal Glory Gardens of Vidalia.

Vidalia Funeral Home was in chare of the arrangements.

Mr. James Daniel “Danny” Beckworth, Sr., 67, Obituary

[Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mr. James “Danny” Beckworth, age 67, Lyons, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital after an extended illness.

He was a native of Bryan County, living most of his life in Lyons. He was employed with the City of Lyons working as a heavy machine operator. He attended Liberty Baptist Church of Lyons. He was preceded in death by one son, Martin Beckworth.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Beckworth, Lyons; two sons, James Daniel Beckworth, Jr., Lyons, and Charles Beckworth, Pembroke; five stepchildren, Barbara Conway, Texas, Bobby Ford, Lyons, Gary Ford, Tifton, Jeffrey Ford, Vidalia, and Glenda Ford, Soperton; five brothers, Lewis Beckworth, Uvalda, Jack Beckworth, Middleburg, Bobby Beckworth, Rincon, Terrell Beckworth, Savannah, and Ronald Beckworth, Pembroke; five sisters, Janie Fiorot, Maryanna, Florida, Elizabeth Cone, Bloomindale, Martha Wiggins, Ellabelle, Nancy Smith, twin City, and Brenda Sapp, Jacksonville; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 17, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Jones-Stewart Funeral Home in Lyons with Rev. Henry Dowd officiating. Interment followed.

Mr. William Maxie Chalker, 83, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Veteran

Mr. William Maxie Chalker, age 83, Vidalia, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, in the Carl Vinson Veterans Adminstration Medical Center of Dublin after an extended illness.

He was a native of Ozark, AL, residing in Vidalia for many years. He was a retired helicopter mechanic. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Vidalia Baptist Temple.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Chalker, Vidalia; one daughter, Janice Snellgove, Vidalia; two sons, Mike Chalker, Dothan, AL, and Danny Chalker, Ozark; give grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, J.W. Chalker, Ozark; and one sister, Ruby Peral Phillips, Ozark.

Local funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Graveside services were conducted Monday, April 18, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Woodlawn Memory Gardens of Ozark. Interment followed.

Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark was in charge of the out-of-town arrangements.

Mr. Clyde Clifton Culler, 80, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Veteran

Mr. Clyde Clifton Culler, Jr., age 80, Vidalia, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in Meadows Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, later moving to Vidalia, then to Hilton Head, South Carolina, and vack to Vidalia. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, prior owner of Georgia Machine and Manufacturing Company, Inc. of Vidalia, former president of the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce. He was involved in numerous city and civic activities and was a member of the Low Country Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, south Carolina.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine C. Culler, Vidalia; three daughters, Leslie C. Weaver, Christina Burdette and Jennifer Alsdord, all of Vidalia; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Louise Ellison, Winston-Salem; and several nieces and newphews.

Memorial services will be conducted Thursday, April 21, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Rev. Marck Barth officiating.

Mrs. Gertrude Yocum Gordon, 93, Obituary

[Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mrs. Gertrude Yocum Gordon, age 93, Lyons, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Meadows Regional Medial Center.

She was a native of Lockport, N.Y. She was a registered nurse. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons, the United Methodist Women, the joy Fellowship and the Leck S. Strader Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James H. Gordon, Sr.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucy G. Andrews and Trygve Tollefsvol, Bremen, Ala., and Trudy G. and John C. Groves, Appling; two sons and daughters-in-law, James H. Gordon,, Jr. and Sandra W. Gordon, Marietta, and Henry N. Gordon, III, and Georgett R. Gordon, Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Lyons with Rev. James Aycock and Dr. Max Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery of Richmond, Va.

Pallbearers were Paul C. McGowan, James W. McDaniel, Steven W. Gordon, Charles L. Andrews, Robert G. Andrews and Trygve Tollfsvol.

Mrs. Dorthena B. “Doris” Guinn, age 43, Alamo, died Friday, April 15, 2005, after a brief illness.

She was a native of Wheeler County. She was employed with Tumi Luggage of Vidalia, was a homemaker and a member of Snow Hill Church of God. She was preceded in death by on e stepson, Robert Patrick Guinn.

Survivors include her husband, Quinton Guinn, Alamo; two daughters, Alicia Caraway, Lyons, and Pamela Guinn, Alamo; one step-daughter, Patricia Bautista, Victorville, California; her mother, Agnes Brown, Alamo; two sisters, Bertha Fowler, Alamo, and Rachael Vaughn, Steeinihachee, Florida; three brothers, Ralph Brown, Scotland, and Jerry Brown and Jessie Brown, both of Alamo; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 17, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Snow Hill Church of God with Rev. W.R. Connell and Rev. Doyle Connell officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Evelyn O. Jones, 70, Obituary

[Orlando, Florida]

Mrs. Evelyn O. Jones, age 70, Orlando, Florida, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, in Orlando after an extended illness.

She was a native of Sanford, Florida, currently residing in Orlando. She was an executive for the Sanford Herald in the 1950s and 1960s. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and Whole World Gospel Center in Sanford.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Angela Evans, Franklin, North Carolina, and Auren Evans, Geneva, Florida; two daughters and son-in-law, Alexandrine and Bennie Galbreath, Orlando, and Penelope Evans, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; two brothers, Glynn Jones, Altamonte springs, Florida, and Frederick Jones, Sanford; one sister, Shirley Bagley, Lake Mary, Florida; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, April 15, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in Galbreath Cemetery. Interment followed.

Mrs. Virginia Brooks Richardson, age 75, Ailey, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, in Meadows regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

She was a native of Wheeler County, living most of her life in Ailey, She was a homemaker and a member of Ailey Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Richardson and Terry Richardson, both of Ailey; and one aunt, Geneva Hinson, Cochran.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home. Interment followed in Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John and Charlie Robison, Sims Taylor, Larry and Randall Cooper and Johnny Richardson.

Mr. Felix Arthur Smith, age 72, Lyons, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at his residence after a brief illness.

He was a native of Toombs County, living in the area for many years. He was a retired truck driver with R.L. cato and a member of Lyons Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebie James Smith.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Felix Wayne and Sophia Smith, Lyons, Donald James and LeeAnn Smith, Glennville, and Sammy Eugene and Sherri Smith, Leesburg; three sisters, Isabell Harden, Lyons, JoAnne Smith, Gray, and Imogene Kersey, Kentucky; three brothers, Venson Smith, Conyers, Pat Smith, Pembroke, and Frank Smith, Portal; four grandsons and spouse, Felix Duane and Becky Smith, Reidsville, Christopher A. Smith and Tucker and Tye Smith, all of Leesburg; three great-grandchildren, Drew, Ammiee and Hunter Smith, all of Reidsville; four sisters-in-law, Jackie Meeks, Robie Haines, Hattie Mae James and Marie Meeks; two brothers-in-law and spouse, Jessie and Willie James, South Carolina, and Junior Caraway, Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in Lyons Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Hardens Chapel Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Junior Turner, David and Randy Usher, Michael Caraway, Tommy Huelett and Jim Gillis. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Lyons Free Will Baptist Church.

Mr. Hugh N. “Diddy” Smith, age 91, Vidalia, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, following a brief illness.

He was a native of Vidalia. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was an active member of The Primitive Baptist Church of Vidalia. He was prceded in death by his parents, Samuel D. Smith and Lottie Rico Smith, his wife, Mattie Mae Burns, one son, Devohn Smith, and four brothers, Carlos Smith, Elsmer “Coot” Smith, Samuel “S.M.” Smith; and three sisters, Grace Conner, Mary Harrington and Varnell Watts.

Survivors include one brother Raymond Smith, Vidalia; two sisters, Geneva Caraway, Florida, and Beatrice Lanier, Savannah; one daughter-in-law, Trudy Smith, Charleston, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Old Line Primitive Baptist Church of Vidalia with Elder Tommy Roundtree officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens near Vidalia.

Active pallbearers were Rudy Smith, Sam Smith, Chris Lanier, Ervin Smith, Jimmy burns and Earl Burns. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Berry, Roy Stewart, Wyman Braddy, Hugene Burns, Bobby Moore and Gene Vincent.

Mr. John Bomar Thigpin, age 93, Vidalia, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, in the Meadows Nursing Center in Vidalia after an extended illness.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was a retired manager of Ailey Hardwar and a member of Higgston Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, lice Faircloth Thigpin, Vidalia, one daughter, Edith Thippen, Vidalia; one sister, Vonnell Thigpen, Vidalia; two sisters-in-law, Nelle Thigpen, Lyons, and Thelma Thigpen, Claxton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 8, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeal Home with Dr. Fred swann and Rev. Jimmy Smith officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenneth, Greg and Brent Thigpen, Terry Whigham, Ethan Kramer and Greg Goff.

Mr. Carlis L. Wilson, age 68, Lyons, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in Memorial Medical Center of Savannah.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was a retired General Superintendent for Whalley Construction of Savannah, retired from the 878th Combat Engineering Company Georgia National Guard Unit of Lyons and was a member of Lyons Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Lou Wilson, Lyons; one son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Rick and Cheryl Wilson, Lyons; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Tony Lopez, Lyons; two brothers, Ralph Wilson and Ronald Wilson, both of Lyons; one sister, Pat Richey, Grovetown; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in Lyons Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Phillips and Rev. Reuben Cason officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens near Vidalia.

Active pallbearers were Carl Sharpe, Danny Dixon, Speck Nobles, Michael Grimes, Buddy Paradice, Wendell Hall, Paul Copeland and Glenn Allen. Honorary pallbearers were Jolly Graham, Pat Suits, Bobby Howell, Frederick Taylor, George Fant and Howell Sharpe.
