Miss. Hailee LeShae Briggs, infant, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Miss Hailee LeShae Briggs, infant daughter of Max and LwShae Briggs, Vidalia, died at birth Tuesday, January 25, 2005, in Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia.

Survivors other than her parents include maternal grandparents, Michael and Brenda Galbreath, Vidalia; paternal grandparents, Teresa and Dan Briggs, Akron, Ohio; maternal great-grandmothers, Frances Williamson and Low Rita Galbreath, both of Vidalia; paternal great-grandmothers, Patricia Warner and Ruth Lachoff both of Akron; two uncles, Shawn Galbreath, Vidalia, and Eric Trautman, Akron; and one aunt, Alexis Durst, Akron.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 27, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Jimmy Willhite officiating. Interment followed in Galbreath Cemetery.

Mr. William C. “Mr. Bill” Joyner, 72, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mr. William C. “Mr. Bill” Joyner, age 72, Vidalia, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, in Memorial Health University Medical Center of Savannah after a brief illness.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was owner and operator of Bill’s Donuts of Vidalia and a member of Vidalia Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Vonelle Joyner, Vidalia; his mother, Clara Turner, Vidalia; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Shawn Morgan, Lyons; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Deana Joyner, Vidalia; three brothers, Talmadge Joyner, Lyons, Dennis Joyner; Vidalia, and Charles Joyner, Thomson; one sister, Rosa Soley, Webb, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Akins, Michael Hipps, Denise Morgan, Joseph Joyner, Melissa Joyner, Becky James and Daniel Morgan; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 29, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. in the Vidalia Church of God with Rev. Joe Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Pinecrest Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Michael Higgs, Joseph Joyner, Joe Morgan, Thomas Soley, Rhet Jay and Brian McDonald. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Durrnece, Michael Keating, Buddy Strickland and Gary Robinson.

Rev. Herman N. Mathews, 77, Obituary

[Florence, Florence County, South Carolina]

Rev. Herman N. Mathews, age 77, Florence, South Carolina, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, in Florence.

He was a native of Telfair County, living most of his life in Tifton, before moving to Florence. He was a retired minister and had served churches in South Georgia for 27 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tifton. He is preceded in death by his parents, Will L. and Estelle Johnson Mathews, his wife, Cora Blue Mathews and one son, John M. Mathews.

Survivors include one daughter, Sue Mathews, Florence; two sisters, Nora Walker, Rhine, Georgia, and Frances Knowles, Dalton, Georgia; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 29, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Perry Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in Snowridge Cemetery in Ashburn.

Mr. Charles Dennis Mosley, 76, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mr. Charles Dennis Mosley, age 76, Vidalia, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at Meadows Regional Medical Center.

He was a Toombs County native. He was employed with Kutchey Auto Supply for over 30 years. He was a U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Ambrose Mosley, and one son, Bruce Salyer.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Saxon, Eden, and Charleen S. Anders, Savannah; one daughter-in-law, Vickie Salyer, Ellabell; two grandson, Ricky Salyer and John Saxon; one granddaughter, Jessica Saxon Jessen; two sisters, Iona McNatt, Vidalia, and Sally Thompson, Faulkville; one brother and sister-in-law, Jule and Lousie Mosley, Vidalia; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 28, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel. Interment followed in Hillcrest Abbey West.

Palmer, Mrs. Louise Cauley, 84, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mrs. Louise Cauley Palmer, age 84, Vidalia, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at the Bethany Home Nursing Center in Vidalia after an extended illness.

She was a native of Treutlen County, living for many years in Montgomery County and later moving to Toombs County. She was owner and operator of Palmer’s Fish Market in Dublin and Handi Check in Vidalia. She was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Busy Bee Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Palmer.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bracken and Deanea Palmer, Dublin, and Dr. Al and Mrs. Debbie Palmer, Statesboro; one daughter and son-in-law, Julia P. and Jimmy Musgrove, Vidalia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Elbert Reynolds, Vidalia, and Elsa and William Smith, Tarrytown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Preston and Mae Cauley, Soperton, and Willie and Emma Cauley, Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren and spouses, Jay and Lori Palmer, Flowery Branch, Polly P. and John Daniels, Dublin, Marly M. and Doug Roper, Vidalia, and Harrison, Brennan and Mary Lee Palmer, all of Statesboro; three great-grandchildren, Brooke and Marina Daniels, Dublin, and Paige Palmer, Flowery Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 27, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Rev. Murray Ward officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harrison and Brennan Palmer, Glenn and William Cauley, Daniel and Mike Salem and Wendell Smith.

Mr. James Ervin Phillips, 61, Obituary

[Leesburg]

Mr. James Ervin Phillips, age 61, Leesburg, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at his residence.

He was a native of Emanuel County, residing in Leesburg for many years. He was an electronic technician, having worked with both Sears and Cook’s Appliance Service. He was a member of the App Flying Club and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Velma Roundtree Phillips, Leesburg; one son and daughter-in-law, James Mark and Dani Phillips, Leesburg his parents, Delmus and Fonnie Mae Phillips, Oak Park; three brothers, Jerone Phillips, Ronald Phillips and Wayne Phillips, all of Oak Park; and two grandchildren, Mark Phillips, Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Phillips.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 30, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Bob Corley, Rev. Henry Dowd, Rev. Gary Roberson and Mr. Bill Wimberly officiating. Interment followed in the North Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Otis “Shorty” Phillips, age 85, died Thursday, January 27, 2005, in Toombs Nursing Home in Lyons.

He was a native of Toombs County, living most of his life in Oak Park. He was a member of the Oak Park Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Alderman, and one grandson, Steve Alderman.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Salter Phillips, Oak Park; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and larry Strange, Oak Park, and Kathleen and Steve Nettis, Metter; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Renee Johnson, Cobbtown; one daughter-in-law, Julia Alderman, McIntyre; one sister, Gladys Wilkes, Oak Park; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 29, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home of Statesboro with Rev. Ken Morgan officiating. Interment followed in the Emit Grove Church Cemetery.

Mr. Willie Frank Smith, Mt. Vernon, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at the Wheeler County Hospital, Glenwood.

He was a native of Montgomery County.

Survivors include four sister, Sarah Jackson, Mt. Vernon, and Eva Conway, Mary Smith and Hattie Smith, all of Savannah; and seven brothers, George Smith, and Gerald Smith, both of Newark, N.J., John Smith and Harris Parham, both of Miami, Florida, and Glen Smith, David Smith and Alvin Smith, all of Savannah.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Mt. Ararat Church of Mt. Vernon with Prophetic Nina B. Godfrey officiating. Interment followed in the McRae Cemetery of Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Willie "Duke" Spires, age 73, Vidalia, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.

He was a native of Montgomery County, living most of his life in Toombs County. He was a retired appliance repairman, a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a volunteer with the South Thompson Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Leartis Vinson Spires, Vidalia; one son and daughter-in-law, Willie and Debbie Spires, Vidalia; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Tommy Dismuke, Lyons; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a friend, John McDonald, Vidalia.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 29, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Dowd and Rev. Steven Toole officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Bo Herndon, Kevin Copeland, Danny Wommack, Tony Ogletree, Buddy Galbreath and Glenn Sewell.

Miss Debra Ann Wilkes, age 50, Vidalia, died Sunday, January 30, 2005.

She was a native of Montgomery County. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon Church of God and was employed by the Western Sizzlin’ in Vidalia. She was preceded in death by her mother, Clenice Hardeman Wilkes.

Survivors include her two sons, Dusty Wilkes and Adama Wilkes, both of Vidalia; her father, Bill Wilkes, Vidalia; one sister, Bonnie Edenfield, Brunswick; two brothers, Don Wilkes, East Dublin, and Jimmy Wilkes, Soperton; and one granddaughter, Denise Wilkes.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Edenfield officiating. Interment will follow in Walker Cemetery in Montgomery County.
