Mr. Jerry Wayne Avret, 59, Obituary

[Sylvania, Screven County, Georgia]

Veteran Mr. Jerry Wayne Avret, age 59, Sylvania, died Saturday, February 26, 2005, in the Screven County Hospital.

He was a native of Screven County. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Southeast Asia and was a machinist at Plant Vogtle. He was a member of Goloid United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles M. Avret.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Chamness Avret, Sylvania; one step-daughter, Minday Heinemeyer, Sylvania; two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Matt and Angie Hamilton, Rincon, and Andy and Lisa Young, Savannah; his mother, Estelle Bragg Avret, Sylvania; two sisters and brothers-in-law, JoAnn A. and Emory Alloways and Charlotte A. and Bobby Lambret, all of Sylvania; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Kathy Avret, Sylvania; seven step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 1, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. in Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home Chapel with Minister George Pevey officiating. Interment followed in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Benji Hodges, Johnny Flanders, Roger Forehand, Tommy Harlon and members of the Maintenance Department at Plant Votgle.

Mr. Rube Beecher, 92, Obituary

[Orange Park, Clay County, Florida]

Mr. Rube Beecher, age 92, Orange Park, Florida, died Saturday, February 26, 2005.

He was a native of Baxley. He managed the Piggly Wiggly stores for Baxley and Lyons for many years and the Gull Cove Apartments in Orange Park. He served on the City Council for Lyons. He is preceded in death by one grandson, Jeffrey Shaw.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Allen Shaw-Caillouet, Orange Park, and Linda and Joe Pepe, Mandarin, Florida; three grandchildren, Marty Shaw, Jacksonville, Florida, Michael Shaw, Orange Park, and Christina Clayton, Canton, Georgia; five great-grandchildren; one brother, James T. Beecher; and three sisters, Lois Carter, Clara Coates and Sally Canady, all of Jacksonville.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in Hardage-Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home with Rev. James H. Branch officiating. Interment followed in Jacksonville Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 5851 St. Augustine Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.

Mrs. Merlene Davis, 58, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mrs. Merlene Davis, age 58, Vidalia, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at her residence after an extended illness.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs and Montgomery counties. She was retired from Oxford of Vidalia and a member of North Thompson Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert Davis, Vidalia; four daughters, Lynn NeeSmith, Lyons, and Celetta Aultman, Tammy McGowan and Delores Norflett, all of Vidalia; two sons, Dariel Davis, Vidalia, and Carl Davis, Lyons; one sister, Laverne Rogers, Bloomingdale; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 27, 2005, at 2:00 a.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Dewitt Corbin and Rev. K.C. Seabery officiating. Interment followed in North Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Duel Davis, Kenneth H. Davis, Jimmy Rogers, Sammy Rogers, Erie Miller and Greg Wiggins.

Mrs. Embell Louise Phillips Dixon, 96, Obituary

[Ocala, Marion County, Florida]

Mrs. Embell Louise Phillips Dixon, age 96, Ocala, Florida, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, in Ocala after an extended illness.

She was a native of Toombs County, residing most of her life in Florida. She was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Emma Mae Bunting, Ocala; one son, Lamar Louis Phillips, Sr., Cedar Crossing; seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. in the Phillips Cemetery with Rev. Ronald Cobb officiating. Interment followed.

Mr. Garland Hutcheson, 74, Obituary

[Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mr. Garland Hetcheson, age 74, Lyons, died Friday, February 25, 2005, in the Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia after a brief illness.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was a retired truck driver and Methodist by faith.

Survivors include five sons, Tim Hutcheson, Mt. Hope, West Virginia, Tony and Jerry Hutcheson, both of Lyons, and Joseph and Jonathan Garlan Hutcheson, both of Dublin; one daughter, Garlana Hutcheson-Matthews, Savannah; two step-sons, Thomas Humprhey, Vero Beach, Florida; and Robbie Griffitts, Dublin; two step-daughters, Melissa Coley, Atlanta, and Joanna Velez, Savannah; one sister, Dorothy Joiner, Hawkinsville; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 27, 2005, at 3:30 p.m. in Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. B.L. Horne officiating. Interment followed in Center Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Edwin Velez, Pat Mathews, Mitchell Bellflower, John Coley, Cody Agro and Ivan Jones.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Jordan, 87, Obituary

[Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mrs. Annie Ruth Jordan, age 87, Lyons, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Coquina Center, Ormond Beach, Florida, after an extended illness.

She was a native of Volusia County, Florida, living most of her life in Toombs County. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Edmond Chapel Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Jordan, one son, William Ray, and one daughter, Lora Gaile.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley J. Morris, Brooklet, Georgia, Faye Jordan, Daytona Beach, Florida, and Lisa Jordan, Holly Hill, Florida; two sons, Gary B. Jordan, Jr., St. Augustine, Florida, and James R. Jordan, Ormond Beach; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, W. Buster Mulkey, Greenwood, S.C., and Robert J. “Bob” Mulkey, Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Helen Toole and Lola b. Griner, both of Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, February 25, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in Edmond Chapel Church of God with Rev. R.M. Warren and Rev. F.M. Henderson officiating. Interment followed in Harden’s Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers were D.J. Lynn, Dalton Lynn, Tony Jordan, Gary Morris, David Knight, Christopher Everett, Sean Richardson and Matthew Morris.

Mr. Wayland O. “W.O.” Parrish, 83, Obituary

[Alamo, Wheeler County, Georgia]

Veteran Mr. Wayland O. “W.O.” Parrish, age 83, Alamo, formerly of Vidalia, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness.

The Marlboro, South Carolina native lived in Chesapeake, Virginia, moving to Vidalia in 1981 and to Alamo in 1999. He was a retired Timber Inspector, a veteran of World War II serving in the 101st Airborne Division where he fought at Bastone, Belgium, and was the recipient of the Purple Hear. He was an active member of the Alamo and Grace United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, and a member of the Wisecrackers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Parrish.

Survivors include four daughters, Becky Woods Purvis, Alamo, Joyce Bass, Easley, South Carolina, Nancy Baker, Norfolk, Virginia, and Ginger Griffin, Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sons, Jim Parrish, Wrightsville, and Tommy Parrish, Martinsburg, West Virginia; and several grandchildren, friends and neighbors including Larry Weeks, Steve Weeks, Hilda Kelly and Tommy Nelson.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 20, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne McDaniel and the Rev. Nick Hazelton officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wallace Durden, Jimmy Riddle, Rusty and Mickey Purvis, Tim Clark and Robbie Mitchell.

Mr. Wallace Smith, age 85, Vidalia, died Monday, February 28, 2005, in Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia after a brief illness.

He was a native of Emanuel County, living most of his life in Toombs County. He was a retired grocer and a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Doshaleen Smith, Vidalia; two sons, Alan Smith, Vidalia, and Ronald Smith, Augusta; two daughters, Vivian Sewell and Vicki Thompson, both of Vidalia; two sisters, Emma Luthi and Bobbie Nell Carter, both of Vidalia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Gilbert Wommack officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jim James, Sam James, Bob Ennis, Billy Merritt, Mike Coursey and Buddy Galbreath.

Mrs. Maudie Hall Stephens, 101, Obituary

[Glenwood, Wheeler County, Georgia]

Mrs. Maudie Hall Stephens, age 101, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at the Accord Nursing Facility in Glenwood.

She was native of Emanuel County, living most of her life in Decatur, Georgia. She was a dressmaker and an antique doll collector. She was a member of the Atlanta Doll Club Guild and the Columbia Baptist Church in Decatur.

Survivors include two daughters, Ouida S. Cheney, Dawsonville, Georgia, and Myrtice Locke, St. Petersburg, Florida; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and several geat-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 26, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Jones-Stewart Funeral Home with Rev. Everett Tumblin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ohoopee Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, ℅ Eloise Rollison, 1833 Raymond Rollison Road, Lyons, GA 30436.

Mrs. Jean Douglas Wiseman, 74, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Mrs. Jean Douglas Wiseman, age 74, died Friday, February 18, 2005, following an extended illness.

She was a native of Jellico, Tennessee, later moving to Rome and then to Vidalia. She was part of the Wiseman Banking Company. She was a member of Seven Hills Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Maude Douglas, her husband, Paul Wiseman, and one son, Doug Wiseman.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Luanne and Wade McLeod, Vidalia; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Steve and Betty Wiseman, Winter Springs, Florida; eight grandchildren, Joseph, Benjamin, Stephen, David, Anna and Nathan McLeod and Erin and Laura Wiseman; one sister, Ruth Riley; one half-brother, Virgil Doan; one half-sister, Sadie Jones; several nieces, including Anthonette Fuller; and several nephews.

Graveside services were conducted Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Oak Noll Cemetery with Ronnie Newberry officiating. Interment followed.

Pallbearers were Joseph McLeod, Benjamin McLeod, Stephen McLeod, David McLeod, Chance Baxley and Jerry Wiseman.
