Mr. Willie Merlon Davis, 66, Obituary

[Alston, Montgomery County, Georgia]

Mr. Willie Merlon Davis, age 66, Alston, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his sister’s home after an extended illness.

He was a native of Toombs County, living most of his life in Alston. He was a farmer and a member of Alston Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merlon and Cornelia Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Elease Johnson Davis, Alston; four brothers and sisters-in-law, G.L. Davis, Johnny and Pam Davis and Hugh and Sandra Davis, all of Collins, and Billy Davis, Normantown; three sisters and brother-in-law, Betty Harrelson, melba Davis and Sharon and Eric Mack, all of Collins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Rev. K. C. Seaberry, Rev. Andrew Nelms and Rev. H.J. Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Sharpe Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joel Buttersworth, Dewayne Moser, Craig Jack and Michael Johnson and Timmy and James Davis.

Mrs. Claire J. Fountain, 59, Obituary

[Tarrytown, Montgomery County, Georgia]

Mrs. Claire J. Fountain, age 59, Tarrytown, died Friday, March 18, 2005, in Meadows Nursing Center of Vidalia after an extended illness.

She was a native of Bartow, Georgia, living in Tarrytown for many years. She was employed with State Farm Insurance for 30 years. She was a member of Higgston Baptist Church where she was the church pianist for 30 years.

Survivors include her husband, Lamar D. Fountain, Tarrytown; her father, Charlie Jordon, Bartow; two god children, Robert and Amy Roberson, both of Lyons; two god grandchildren, Emilee and Darby Roberson, both of Lyons; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted Sunday, March 20, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Ferguson Cemetery near Vidalia with Rev. Kevin Moore and Rev. Joe Phillips officiating. Interment followed.

Active pallbearers were Rodney Brantley, Jason Brantley, Sean Moxley, Matt Mead and Berrie Allen. Honorary pallbearers were Franklin Brantley, Ronald Morris, Earl McCranie, Frank Brantley, Talmadge Mead and Bill Bennett.

Mr. Ralph Gillis, 88, Obituary

[Soperton, Treutlen County, Georgia]

Veteran

Mr. Ralph Gillis, age 88, Soperton, died Friday, March 11, 2005.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. He was retired from the Union Camp Corp. and was a membr of Lothair United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ola Dukes Gillis, and his wife, Margaret Hardy Gillis.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Hughes, Soperton; one sister, Roberta Gillis, Soperton; one brother; W.O. “Bill” Gillis, Vidalia; one granddaughter and spouse, Mechelle and Brian Foskey, Soperton; one grandson, Jack Hughes, Soperton; and four great-granchildren, Brian Hughes and Evan Hughes, Dublin, and Elizabeth Foskey and Benjamin Foskey, Soperton.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 14, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Veal and Rev. James Ryburn officiating. Interment followed in Westview Cemetery, Soperton, with military honors.

Pallbearers were Billy Cammack, Keith Wimber, Colon Horne, Eddie Williams, Jr., Freddy Willis and Al Heath.

Mrs. Latha Lee “Granny” Graham, age 89, Obituary

[Ocala, Marion County, Florida]

Mrs. Latha Lee “Granny” Graham, 89, Lyons, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in the Meadows Nursing Center of Vidalia after an extended illness.

She was a native of Johnson County, residing in Lyons for many years. She was retired from Toombs County Manufacturing Company, was a member of Lyons Senior Citizens, a member of Faith Baptist Ladies Prayer Group and a member of Faith Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Terrell Graham.

Survivors include three daughters, Lottie Lockley, Vidalia, and Carolyn Wilkes and Julia Phillips, both of Lyons; one son, Sonny Graham, Lyons; two sisters, Louise Kuykendall, Knoxville, Tenn., and Polly Kight, Appling, Georgia; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 18, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Faith Baptist Church of Lyons with Rev. Andy Williams and Rev. Raymond Burrell officiating. Interment followed in South Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Larry Lockley, Greg Wilkes, Terry Wilkes, Gordy Wilkes, Gray Graham, Jimmy Lockley, Derrek Wren and Ray Cheshire.

Mrs. Evelyn Coleman Hattaway, age 89, Obituary

[Reidsville, Tattnall County, Georgia]

Mrs. Evelyn Coleman Hattaway, 89, Reidsville, died Monday, March 21, 2005, in Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia.

She was a native of Candler County, living in Collins and later moving to Reidsville. She was a retired bookkeeper, and was a member of Reidsville Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo “Red” Hattaway.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Annette and Ray Blount, Vidalia, and Felishia Finch, Claxton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Pat Hattaway, Reidsville; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Reidsville Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Paton, Rev. Calvin Durrence and Rev. Don Moye officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Barry Blount, Bobby Hattaway, Woody, Hattaway, Tommy Odum, Keith Spivey and Andy Bowen. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the Reidsville Baptist Church, Jack Hill, Johnny Sikes and Charles Charles.

Ms. Earldeen Braddy Hughes, 65, Obituary

[Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia]

Ms. Earldeen Braddy Hughes, age 65, Vidalia, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at her daughter’s residence after an extended illness.

She was a native of Montgomery County, residence in Vidalia for many years. She was a homemaker, a charter member of Vidalia Baptist Temple and manager for Lighthouse Singers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Estelle and Elzie Humphrey and Otis Braddy, one sister, Wauline Moxley, and her husband, Sweet Hughes.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan L. and Fred Young, Dublin, and Carol J. and Brad Jeffcoat, Vidalia; one son and daughter-in-law, Don R. and Pam Paradice, Vidalia; one brother and sister-in-law, Oliver Bennett and Joyce Braddy, Lexington, S.C.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 18, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Vidalia Baptist Temple with Rev. Paul Thompson and Rev. David Edenfield officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lucky Hayes, Hughie Swearinger, Jeffrey Williamson, John Beall, Jamey Toler, Barneage Young, Robert Hughes and David Rigby.

Mrs. Ruth McRae Peterson, age 78, Kennesaw, died Thursday, March 17.

She was a native of Robeson County, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin Norman McRae and Alice Lee Deaton McRae, and her husband, Jim Neil Peterson, Sr.

Survivors include one daughter, Laura Katherine Peterson, Kennesaw; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim Neil, Jr. and Suzanne Peterson, Atlanta, William Lee and Terri Peterson, Cary, N.C., and John Marvin and Myra Peterson, Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Sara M. Mrs. Carol Delores Rowe, age 62, Uvalda, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, in the Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia after an extended illness.

She was a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, residing in Uvalda for many years. She was a homemaker and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include her husband, Tony L. Rowe, Uvalda; four daughters, Teresa Duke, Montrass, Virginia, Patricia Hesiluys, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Regina Stephens, Hazlehurst, and Kimberly Davenport, Knoxville; one brother, Bruce Howerton, Knoxville; five sisters, Polly Jordan, Barbara Britton, Sandra Joslin, Margie Struzinski and Ada Pratt, all of Knoxville; and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 24, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the roses Funeral Home Chapel of Knoxville with Rev. Stephen Rowe officiating. Interment will follow in the Halls Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Margaret Edwards Wilkes, age 65, Oak Park, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at her residence after a brief illness.

She was a native of Washington County, residing most of her life in Toombs County. She was a retired seamstress, waitress and a member of Lower Corinth Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Laverne Newsome, Lyons; two step-sons, Don and Jerry Wilkes, both of Jacksonville, Florida; two grandsons, John Ashley Newsome and Jessee Kalap Newsome, both of Lyons; five brothers, Dempsy Covington, East Dublin, Danny Ray Covington, Lexington, S.C., and Ricky Leon Covington, Pooler; six sisters, Betty Dailey, Savannah, Shelvy Jean Nuburn, Statesboro, Patricia MocCorkie, Waynesboro, Faye Brown, Sylvania, Carolyn Boyd, Newington, Georgia, and Barbara Sue Camiska, Augusta.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Rev. Tim Brantley and rev. James Covington officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Alice McCumber Woods, age 71, Uvalda died Sunday, March 13, 2005 in the Meadows regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. She was a homemaker and a member of Snowhill Church of God near Glenwood.

Survivors include two sons, Harry Wood and Rickie Wood, both of Cedar Crossing; one sister, Christine Jones, Brunswick; four grandchildren, Stephanie Williams, Brunswick, and Christy, Justin and Noah Wood, all of Cedar Crossing; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral home with Rev. Halton Jeffcoat and Rev. W.R. Connell officiating. Interment followed in the Cedar Crossing Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Raffield, Gary Beasley, Robbie Knowles, Brian Powell, Brandon Waters and Lee Barnard.
