Mr. Fisher Lawton Barfoot Obituary
Dublin, Laurens Co, Georgia - Services for Mr. Fisher Lawton Barfoot, 74, will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Dublin.
The Revs. Buford Raffield and Dr. Cliff Morris will officiate. Interment will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Barfoot, son of the late Arthur and Nancy Elizabeth Lord Barfoot, was born August 9, 1929, in Laurens County.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kate Willis Barfoot; three sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Lydia Barfoot of Dublin, Bruce and Vicki Barfoot of Jacksonville, Florida and Stan and Kim Barfoot of Watkinsville; two daughters and sons-in-law Paula and Bill Horton of Cincinnati, Ohio and Donna and Mark Byrd of Talmo. He had 17 grandchildren: Brian Horton, Adam Barfoot, Jeremiah Byrd, Bennett Horton, Grace Byrd, Allyson Barfoot, Bridgett Horton, Blake Horton, Ben Barfoot, Andrew Barfoot, Rachael Byrd, Erica Barfoot, Alex Barfoot, Susan Barfoot, Elizabeth Barfoot, Katelyn Barfoot and Hannah Byrd.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law Clifford and Elsie Barfoot of Dublin and brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Annette Barfoot of Milledgeville; sister, Lucy Collins of Port Saint Lucy, Florida, and sister and brother-in-law, Celestine and Wallace Dean of Dublin, two sisters-in-law Carolyn Lord Barfoot and Orgenola Barfoot of Dublin. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Lamar Barfoot, Robert Woodrow Barfoot, and Cecil Barfoot.
Mr. Barfoot graduated from Dudley High School. He started his career in Dublin with Piggly Wiggly in 1944. He served as store manager, division manager, director of advertising and sales, and vice president, marketing. He retired in 1988. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1988 and served the 155th district for 10 years.
As a legislator he passed a resolution making the Vidalia Onion the Georgia state vegetable. He served as past president of the National Piggly Wiggly Operators Association, president of the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce, president of Georgia Agribusiness Council, chairman of Georgia Council on Economic Education, director of state Joint Tech Georgia Development Fund, chairman of the Vidalia Planning and Zoning Commission, chairman of Toombs County Heart Association and chairman of the Toombs County YMCA. He was a member of the Vidalia Rotary Club, Georgia Farm Bureau and Vidalia Onion Committee. He was honored to be presented the National Good Citizenship Award.
He was selected as Vidalia Citizen of the Year in 1990. He was a former member of the Vidalia First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and most recently was a member of Dublin First Baptist Church.
Mr. Barfoot died Thursday.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons Brian Horton, Adam Barfoot, Bennett Horton, Blake Horton, Ben Barfoot, Andrew Barfoot and Alex Barfoot.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Townsend Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Dublin or other favorite charities.
