Mary Kirkland Vaughn, 75, Obituary

Mary Kirkland Vaughn (December 31, 1929-August 31, 2005)

(December 31, 1929-August 31, 2005)

Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia - Mary Kirkland Vaughn, 75, went home to heaven on the evening of August 31, 2005.

Mary was born in Vidalia, GA. on December 31, 1929. She graduated from Vidalia High School and also attended Georgia State College for Women, in Milledgeville, GA. Mary joined in marriage with Joseph H. "Buck" Vaughn from Dublin, GA. in November 1949. They were together until Buck died in July 1970.

Becoming the sole parent of 3 children, Mary went to work with the Chatham County Mosquito Control District. On May 31, 1993, she retired from Mosquito Control after 22 years of service, having attained the position of Taxonomist Administrative Assistant. While providing the only income for her family, Mary was highly involved in the lives of her growing children. She has always been a lady of quiet strength and wonderful good humor. The challenges of life were met with faith in her Lord Jesus and with energy and determination.

Mary has been a volunteer at White Bluff United Methodist Church during the years of her retirement. She has been a member there since 1969. Over the years, she lived every day actively demonstrating the importance of strong family ties. Mary was also one who loved and enjoyed natural beauty and wonder that God has provided for us. She especially loved the wild birds and she provided them (and the occasional squirrel) with a sanctuary of food and water in the back yard of her Windsor Forest home.

In recent years, one of her frequent enjoyments was to take a book and drive to the Arby's or Burger King near her home. There she would sip on a hot cup of coffee and read, enjoying the activity going on around her. The employees came to look forward to "the lady with the little book". Her son, her daughters, her granddaughter, and her son in law are very grateful to Hospice for having made it possible for Mary to stay at her home. She enjoyed the love of her family and the beauty of nature while she waited to be called home to heaven.

Mary is survived by a son, Joe Vaughn, Jr., of Fernandina Beach, FL.; two daughters and son in law, Kathy Vaughn, of Savannah; Deborah and Roderick Stephenson, of Savannah; granddaughter, Hylan Vaughn Miles, of Savannah; brother and sister in law, Jack and Peggy Kirkland, of Waleska, GA; sister, Nell Kontopolus, of Illinois; special sister in law, Polly Sitas, of Irwington, GA; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family members, and countless friends.

Visitation: 6-8pm Sunday at the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home.

Funeral Services: 11am Monday at White Bluff United Methodist Church, with Dr. Wayne E. Moseley officiating.

Interment: 3:30 pm Monday at Pinecrest Cemetery in Vidalia, GA.

Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah Inc. 1352 Eisenhower Dr. Savannah, GA. 31406.

Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home 7415 Hodgson Memorial Dr Savannah, GA. 31406 (912) 927-1999.
