Lyons - Mr. W. Roy Fletcher, 77, died Sunday, September 1, 2002, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Berrien County, and, after graduating from Moultrie High School in 1943, he was drafted into the U. S. Army. He was sent to the European Theater of Operation, receiving three battle stars: Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, and Central Germany. Mr. Fletcher graduated in 1950 from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and started working for CIT Financial. He was transferred to Vidalia to open the Vidalia CIT Office and was promoted to District Manager in 1957. He started working at Brice Bank in 1961 as Executive Vice President and was promoted to Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO in 1983. He was a past president of the Vidalia Lions Club, was appointed by the Mayor of Vidalia as a commissioner of the Vidalia Housing Authority and was later elected chairman, and was appointed to the Vidalia Development authority and later elected vice chairman. He joined the Vidalia Country Club and was elected to the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Vidalia Rotary Club and was elected to the Board of Directors. He was chosen as Vidalia Citizen of the Year in 1987, was chairman of the committee to organize the present Southeastern Technical Institute in Vidalia, and was later appointed by the Governor of the State of Georgia to the STI Board of Directors and was elected chairman and served nine years. Upon retirement from the Board, he was presented the first U. S. Flag to fly over the school.
Mr. Fletcher was appointed by the Governor to the Georgia Workforce Investment Board, was elected Vice Chairman, and was one of seven in the State to be appointed to the Executive Committee. He was elected Director Emeritus of Southeastern Technical College in 2001. He was a past president of Vidalia Chamber of Commerce and a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia and the Mens Bible Class.
Survivors: three sons, Randy Fletcher of Vidalia, Terry R. Fletcher of Hilton Head, SC, Larry T. Fletcher of Newnan; Hazel Fletcher of Vidalia; two brothers, Walter Fletcher of Princeton, WV, and Fred Fletcher of Sparks; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral: 2:00 p. m. Tuesday, September 3, at First Baptist Church of Vidalia, with Reverend Dr. Bill Berryhill officiating.
Entombment: Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
