Vidalia - Mr. Pierce Wiley Sowell, 74, died Sunday, September 8, at his residence, after an extended illness.
He was a native of Toombs County, working in Spain for four years with the CIA and returning to Vidalia from Fairfax, VA, in 1970. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired from Federal Pacific, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, and Belk Department Store.
Mr. Sowell was a U. S. Marine veteran of World War II, member and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia, and member and former teacher of the Caring and Sharing Sunday School Class; he also taught weekly Bible Study at Grove Apartments.
Survivors: his wife, Myrle M. Sowell of Vidalia; one son, David Scott Sowell of Gracewood; three stepsons, Taryl Wiggins of Uvalda, Harrell Wiggins of Vidalia, and Jon Wiggins of Marietta; two sisters, Quba Lee Davis and Ruth Darley, both of Vidalia; two brothers, Ira Sowell of Atlanta and Carl Sowell of Albany; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 7:00-9:00 p. m. Monday at the Funeral Home.
Funeral: 2:00 p. m. Tuesday in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home, with Reverend Scott McHugh and Tom Moore officiating. Burial: Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Remembrances: First Baptist Church of Vidalia Building Fund.
