Ottis Oliver, 92, Obituary

Ottis Oliver, 92, passed away Friday, April 22, 2005, at Meadows Regional medical Center in Vidalia. He was born March 2, 1913, to Marshall and Mary Anderson Oliver. He worked at various jobs until the early 1940’s when he went to work at the shipyards in Savannah during World War II. Moving back to Tattnall County he farmed several years until be became a barber working in Collins, Midville and Wrens before opening his own shop in Reidsville where he barbered until 1992, when he retired at the age of 79. He is remembered by many men in this area as the man who gave them their first haircut and their first “flat top”. He also loved to carpenter and built the family home he lived in until his death. He was a member of the Full Gospel tabernacle in Collins for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clyde and Bernice, sisters Annie Lee Cowart, Vesta Anderson and Velma Cannon Jarrell, also by a great-granddaughter, Anna Marie Mindt.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Rossie Anderson Oliver of Collins; a son and daughter-in-law, Carroll and Joyce Oliver of Cobbtown; a daughter and son-in-law, Vera and Julian Rogers of Manassas; a brother, Roger Oliver of Collins; two granddaughters, Julie Mindt and Ginger Culberson; two grandson, David and Michael Rogers; four great-granddaughters, Caroline and Katie Rogers, Carmen and Grace Mindt; one great-grandson, Blanden Rogers; one step-greatgrandson, Kevin Sweat; many loving nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Don Oliver, Calvin Anderson, Millard Williams, Tony Oliver, Ottis Anderson, Jr., and Larry Hightower.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 24, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Smith and Mr. John Bradley officiating. Interment followed in the Collins Baptist Church cemetery.

Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
